Now let’s see how to install Adobe Photoshop. There are two ways to run Photoshop.

  1. Using a Vritual Machine.
  2. Using Wine on Linux

Installing Photoshop on Linux using a Virtual Machine

This is the easiest way to use photoshop on Linux. If you don’t know what is a virtual machine. A Virtual Machine is a software that can emulate another operating system within it. We know that Photoshop works fine on Windows OS. So using a virtual machine with windows copy will be just like working on Windows. It is like running Photoshop on Windows and Windows running on Linux and Now let’s see how to implement this.

  1. Install a Virtual Machine like VirtualBox or any other VM you wish.
  2. Now install a windows copy in the VM.
  3. Install Adobe Photoshop just like you install in a Windows PC.
  4. Now you can launch Photshop and edit your photos.

Intalling Adobe Photshop on LInux using Wine.

Don’t know whats wine? Wine is an application that allows us to run windows software on Linux,macOS, and even on android. Actually, wine is a compatibility layer that lets the program run on Unix-like operating systems. Usually, most of the windows programs run on wine, but sometimes we encounter compatibility issues. Sadly not all photoshops can be installed on wine. Yes, you will miss the latest version.

Adobe Photoshop CC 2014, CS4, CS6, and lightroom 5 can be installed. Often gamers use wine to play windows games on Linux.

So let’s install wine first and proceed.

Learn all the zip commands

Check your OS architecture version

There are two versions of wine, that is the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Now have we to check what version is our system. To check that open terminal and type the command below.

lscpu

If your system is relatively new, then it should be a 64-bit system. The CPU op-modes tell you which is your OS version.

Installing Wine

We can get wine directly from the Software center, But it may not be up to date. So it is better to install the latest version for your operating system. PS: I am using Ubuntu. So I will be installing wine in the command line. If you are using a 64-bit system then it is recommended to enable 32-bit libraries. Use the command below to enable 32-bit libraries.

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Now let’s download the wine repository key and add it to our system. Use the commands below to do it.

sudo apt update


wget -qO- https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key


 sudo apt-key add winehq.key

Then add wine repository to our system.

sudo apt install software-properties-common

sudo apt-add-repository "deb http://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ $(lsb_release -cs) main"

Install Wine.

sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

Once successfully installed check the version

wine --version

Install PlayOnLinux

Using wine directly is really complex and hard. To resolve this complex problem. we use PlayOnLinux. It helps use wine by using it graphical interface. Using GUI is easy to navigate install the desired software we want. PlayOnLinux just acts as the front end on WineHQ. And wine acts as the back end. So it is necessary to install wine first.

Now lets install wine.

sudo apt-get install playonlinux

Once PayOnLinux installed. Now we can install Adobe Photshop.

Click on install.

Choose graphics.

Step 3

There are many software’s that are officially supported by the playonlinux. Choose one from the list and click that. Here I choose Adobe Photoshop 2015 CC. And click on install.

Step 4

Then a new window pop out. Click on next.

Click on next.

Now browse the installation file of adobe photoshop 2015 cc. If you don’t have then you will have to download it. Once downloaded. Navigate the install file.

Choose the exe installer.

And click on next.

Then it will download the necessary file needed to install adobe photoshop 2015 cc.

Once the download and install is done. It will ask you to install Microsoft font. Click next.

Once everything is done the Adobe installer window pops out and now follow the regular installation process that we used to do in windows.

Either you can try a trial for a limited time or buy one. Anyways you have to sign in.

You can launch Photoshop from playonlinux. Enjoy.
